What
is PMR?
PMR
or Private Mobile Radio is a two-way communications service, permitting
users to talk either over a short distance on a simple local system
or nation-wide on a complex system. A licence from the Radiocommunications
Agency is needed to operate PMR in the UK and voice, data or mixed
voice and data can be supported. System management is usually the
responsibility of the licensee. PMR is well suited to operations
requiring the passing of frequent short voice or data messages from
a central point to individuals or groups of personnel.
What is Paging?
A pager is a pocket sized personal messaging
system. Message can be received in tone, numeric, or text forms
and subscribers can choose between a privately owned or public subscription
system according to whether they need customised on-site, regional
or national service.
What
is SRBR?
Short Range Business Radio, is
an alternative to PMR where you need to pay for a licence annually
to keep using the radios. SRBR or PMR446 as it is sometimes called
allows you to gain access to two-way communications to a high quality
standard without the Licence fee costs. Not only the savings on
the licence fee are gained but also the equipment is very competitively
priced, some units being less than £100 each. Only 8 frequencies
are available for use on this service, however as it is low power
and only portables can be used, the likelihood of being so close
to enough other users, so that interference is inevitable, is extremely
low.
What
is PAMR?
Public Access Mobile Radio (PAMR) provides mobile communications
on a local, regional or national subscription basis and is ideal
for business users who do not want to own or manage their own systems.
PAMR operates on complex networks and generally offers more communications
options than PMR. Within PAMR are systems such as CBS and TETRA.
Community
Base Stations (CBS)
CBS's
are shared local, two way mobile communications services run by
independent operators like CTS. It is a subscription service and
if preferred, the equipment can be hired (see Hire section). CTS
own several sites within London and have access to many more in
the London and Home Counties areas. Over and above the equipment
costs, the system is charged out on a fixed fee basis at £12.50
per unit per month.
TETRA
TErrestrial Trunked RAdio (also
known as Dolphin TETRA) was a nation-wide communications system that
gave you the capability of FREE person to person calls, plus the
added bonus of a mobile telephone, message pager, ansaphone etc.
For just a flat monthly fee you could communicate with your staff
for FREE. This service is no longer available
